Burning the Midnight Oil
A friend called me yesterday and asked what I would term a “lazy” question.
She said she wants to start her business. An online business and needs help.
So I asked her what type of business she was going into.
I asked her who were her potential customers.
I asked her what are their biggest challenges that she is looking to solve.
I asked her how much time is she willing to put into building the business.
I asked her what was the solution or offer she was planning to present to her customers.
She did not have one answer for me……
But she did say, “I don’t want to spend more than 2 hours a day on this business.”
Fair enough. I can understand that if you’re currently in a day job you probably don’t have more than 2 hours a day to dedicate to a business; online or offline.
Not everyone is like me and will stay up all night writing, creating ads and recording videos for training for my down prospects. That kind of work takes a little more than two hours a day.
Not everyone is like me and will drink coffee all day to keep going at the 9 – 5 job that I still have to present at (for the time being).
Not everyone is like me and has a one year old daughter who thinks she’s an adult and goes to bed at 10 pm.
So I can understand that time is limited and not everyone can burn the midnight oil.
But I’m here to tell you that if you’re NOT willing to burn the midnight oil a few times a week, you’re wasting your time in developing any business ‘on the side’.
But if you’re going into any business you really should have answers to the above questions.
I will think you a fool if you didn’t know who your customers are, what their problems are, what your solution is and the time you’re willing to spend.
Too many people go into business thinking that they can do this on the side.
I have had many late and long nights just to build the business.
Although I do agree that if you can’t build your business part-time you’ll never be able to build it full-time.
It’s a priority and time management thing that ensures you’re able to build in when times are rough, to ensure that when you do leave your day job you don’t WASTE the free time that you now have.
Anyway..
When I first started the online part of my business I said I was only going to work for two hours a day.
I was working four hours a day. This included training, blogging, emails, ads designs etc.
Do I have it down to two hours a day? You can answer that question based on the title of the post!
Going into any business is never easy when you start.
But don’t be discouraged. Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Apple were not built in a day, a week, a month, or a year!!!!
