You’ve probably heard it before – Content is king and Social Media is the queen. (not The Queen, but just queen)……. anywho! And with that you probably know I’m a The Crown Fan!

Content is what everyone sees when you share it on social media, through your website, via videos (like the one above) through your images and status updates.

So when we talk about content creation we need to consider and keep in mind a few things because social media and content creation go hand in hand.

So here are a few things to help you focus on what content to put out there.

1. Make your content new and exciting.

And you’re probably saying to yourself, but there’s nothing new in the world, is there? Well, one of the things that is always good is that you can take old content and put a new spin on it.

One of the things that a lot of people struggle with as well is that everything has been spoken about on social media. That may be so and maybe it’s not! It probably hasn’t been spoken about from your perspective because you’re a completely NEW human being with a NEW experience.

So remember that for your audience, it may be new or the people who are now coming to you, it’s new to them. So keep that in mind when you’re creating your content…. and includes all content! Your blog content, your video content, everything!

So yes, you may have heard it a million times (in your own head), at a webinar, but there are always people who have NOT heard what you have to say.

2. Make sure your content appeals to your audience.

Your audience is going to connect with you.

So, for example, you want to learn how to manage social media, you’re going to connect with whoever teaches you about social media.

You want to learn about how to lose weight by just drinking water, you will probably connect with somebody who gives that solution, drinking water and losing weight.

When you’re creating content it’s not so much about you, but about the people that you’re reaching. This is something that many people in social media forget. Yes you’re important, your perspective is important, but if you’re on social media for business, then your content has to speak to the people who will keep you in business aka your audience.

3. Make sure that your content is for the appropriate platform.

Now, as an engineer I’m always thinking about processes. How do we make it easier? Now you could create what we call evergreen content that then you can take and re-create for specific platforms.

Every platform is different and you want to make sure that you’re doing what you need to do on each platform so that you posts are optimized for maximum view and consumption.

You don’t want to be doing something that’s Instagram-ish, selfie world on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is not the selfie culture.

4. Make sure it’s relevant to your brand.

Now, the thing about content is that when it comes to social media content for your business, think about your business and your customers.

Business owners get burnt out trying to find content that’s not related to their brand or not related to their industry. It’s important that you stay there because that’s what you know. So if you’re a jeweler or whatever they call them, you’re going to be speaking about gold, silver, and all of the other things and where this one was mined and all of these things, because that’s you, that’s what you know. And you can make that exciting because you know about that stuff.

Same thing with healthcare. There are people who could talk about healthcare from now until Jesus returns. I can’t. The most I could talk about healthcare is what people have taught me. And that’s it.

So keep content relevant to your brand.

5. Make sure it’s high quality.

Even though most content on social media and the web is generally free to consume it’s not FREE to create. When you are starting out, you may not be able to afford the $15,000 lights and all of those fancy things, but try to keep the quality of your images, videos etc to a high standard.

Recently I shared some social media tools that you could use to help create videos and graphic content. Some of these tools can help you with the quality images of your pictures, of your videos, etc. Really non-expensive tools that you can use today. 10, 15 years ago, yeah, you probably needed to be a millionaire to do social media right.

6. Not too much, but not too little.

So when it comes to your content, you want to make sure that you’ve got content out there, but you’re not going to saturate the market because that does two things for you. If you are a solopreneur and you’re doing this all on your own and you don’t have a team or you don’t have the luxury of a social media manager to just say, shoot this video and then we’ll take care of the rest. You’ve got to do everything so you don’t want to do too much of it. That’s very important when it comes to the content creation.
