We have a saying in Trinidad,
A Watched Pot Never Boils! (even if it’s a frog watching the pot)
[Tweet “A Watched Pot Never Boils!”]
It’s quite interesting because it reminds me of the many times my mother will try to teach me patience!
She will always use this phrase.
The funny thing is, if you ever try to stand up and watch a kettle boil, it will seem like it’s doing nothing.
I’ve had a few of those experiences in the past 18 months of working this business.
I’ve placed ads online and just sat there watching it to see the results…..
Obviously you know nothing happened…..
Similarly the other day, I sat staring at a sales presentation I needed to finish, and nothing.
The second one was probably my mind going blank.
But there are many times when you have to do what you’re doing and then just take a step back and let whatever has to happen, happen.
I get nervous when I don’t see results instantly. (I’m guilty) But who doesn’t.
I think it has something to do with the era I was born in.
My mother is always telling me, I live in the age of instant gratification!
Well sorry for being born too late! (I mutter under my breath)
But it occurred to me that if I – a mother and wife – love instant gratification what do you think your customers want as well?
Although everyone on the planet knows that you have to work hard to see success.
Riches don’t come over night….
And only long, hard and consistent work will reap results in any business…..
People STILL look for “Get Rich Quick” schemes.
They STILL look for the quick and easy way out of their problems.
Well there is no magic blue pill…..
There is no magic wand that will just magically change your life.
You have a lot of work to do to change your circumstances and most times it starts in your mind.
And not only work, but you have to sacrifice a lot too.
I’ve watched the successful people around the world, and even in my own circles.
They are happy now.
Ask them what they were going through 10 to 20 years ago.
They were eating hops and cheese. (hops is a cheap bread in Trinidad for those who aren’t familiar with the term).
They were wearing the same clothes for 10 years.
They couldn’t afford to change their car every 5 years like some people.
But speak to them now about what they have the ability to do.
They can buy a BMW cash.
They can buy a piece of land – CASH
They can buy apartments – CASH
But they had to wait a really long time for that water to boil. (wink wink)
If you can’t set aside the time it really takes to grow a business that will reap the benefits in life you desire, then you should probably stay in your job for life!
I hope inflation doesn’t affect your pension by the time you’re ready to retire. (not to be mean or anything)
The thing is just like water that takes a set time to boil regardless of WHAT you do
A Business will take a SET time to grow.
And let me tell you it’s a NOT a week,
It’s not a month
It’s not even a year!
I left my job after six months so that I can FOCUS on my business.
Not because my business was doing so well.
I took that leap of faith!
So stop Watching Your Business
START WORKING at your Business.
The Results WILL Come.

Very true… Most people think success came overnight forgetting that Hardwork was put into it. Nice post thanks for sharing.
And not that it’s their fault I don’t think many successful people stress on all the challenges and hardship they went through to get where they are today. And think about it…. when you’re telling the story about success, it does seem to come “quickly”.
Great post!
Patience is a virtue and sadly these days everyone wants success as fast as we can download a song off of iTunes…

Hahaha, Do true Lisa! Instant gratification!
