The short answer that I can give to this question is quite simple.
The word begins with an “L” and ends with a “Y”.
Most businesses and entrepreneurs who waste money on Facebook advertising is because they are
LAZY!
Yup it’s true.
LAZY people waste money on Facebook Advertising.
So am I saying that many business people out there are Lazy?
No!
I’m just saying that they are just lazy with their Facebook strategy.
Understanding Facebook Marketing vs Advertising
Here’s why they are lazy with their Facebook strategy.
Most people on Facebook doing business want to results in the form of sales.
Advertising is deemed the “fastest” way to get sales.
But Facebook is about an engagement strategy.
Facebook doesn’t want SELLING only on its network.
Facebook wants value.
Value takes effort.
Effort usually takes some time.
And the marketing strategy you need to implement on Facebook boils down to four things that include advertising.
Four Components to a Good Facebook Marketing Strategy
1. Fan Page Engagement
So you already know that a Fan Page is the way you will be marketing your business.
But do you know what you’re supposed to be sharing on that Fan Page?
And if your answer was your products and services – that’s the wrong answer……
…… and no one will ever see your Fan Page.
The basic rule recommended by every Facebook expert,
(including Curt Maly on a recent What’s Working Now) webinar
when it comes to the ratio of content to post on your fan page is 10-4-1.
10 entertaining, inspirational or motivational posts
4 industry related (about your business) posts
1 selling post.
In other words words if you post on your fan page 10 times for a week only ONE
Yes ONE post should be selling a product or service!
2. Website Clicks
So the next stage in your Facebook Marketing Strategy is sending people to your website.
Now we can go on about what your website should have on it but that will be another 500 words or so and
you probably don’t have time for that today.
But on your website you want to have value!
What is value you ask?
It’s NOT your products and services.
It’s what people are looking for.
It’s answers to questions people have.
So the thing is you don’t want to spend money on Facebook ads sending people to a website that has no content.
No human being today wants to go to a website that is only about selling unless it’s walmart.com or amazon.com!
No one knows who you are? So your website should be about developing a relationship.
3. Boosting Fan Page Posts
Now once you’ve got people heading over to your website and
you’re posting on your Fan Page you want to boost a post! This should be done every single week.
Here’s another advertising media,
but what you’re actually doing is looking at your BEST performing post from the previous week and you’re going to boost that post!
4. Re-targeting your Audiences
Now here’s what’s powerful!
Remember all those people you were sending over to your website.
Now assuming they landed on a few pages you that you sent them to….
Imagine the image of your website following them all over the web!
Spooky huh?
Well that’s what Re-targeting is all about.
It’s a very sneaky strategy but allows you to continue marketing to your website visitors at all times!
So I hope this has been helpful and you’ll start using Facebook alot smarter than you were before so you’re not Wasting money on Facebook Ads.

Great post Hilary. I need to look more into the retargeting as I know that is a huge part of being online now.
Also good to know that the 10-4-1 strategy is still key in building a business online. I am absolutely sharing this post!
Thanks Katrina, the 10-4-1 rule still very much alive and well! Retargetting is getting bigger and better. Look out for more of these type posts.
